Conclusions from contribution of horse artillery units in „Operation Zaolzie”
Summary:
Horse artillery was one the smallest elements of the entire artillery of Polish Army. Grouped in units equipped with 12-16 canons, horse artillery regiments (dak) were assigned to Cavalry Brigades each with 3-4 cavalry regiments. When the process of Polish Army modernization started in 1936, the mentioned units were left out of consideration. Although cavalry itself was well and newly equipt with anti-tank Bofors mk 36 guns, it`s artillery was still based on old but reliable 75 mm guns mk 02/26. The most annoying issue was a limited maneuverability and inefficient logistics, particularly quartermastery. In this shape, few batteries of horse artillery were sent in mid-September 1938 to Zaolzie region to take part in reclaiming operation planned by Polish Army against Czechoslovakia, which was under pressure of incoming Munich Agreement. Two months of semi-war functioning in Zaolzie`s mountain/unpland area showed horse artillery as more and more unprepared and outdated formation, which should be at least partly modernized. Although reports made for high commanders after the operation were optimistic, many officers noticed some alarming shortcomings but others neglected them. When we look today at the participation of horse artillery units  in Zaolzie operation stipulates that even short term conflict could show all defects of the discussed formation.  Only such an incentive could force Polish Army commanders to solve some of horse artillery’s problems in a very short time.
